Quotes & Observations

(or, Ain't Life a Hoot!)

by

Michael Holmes, R.N.

 ~~~~~~~
The passion of awareness is to become more aware.  Consciousness only becomes more.
*******
We are quick to pledge allegiance to expanding consciousness but run, screaming, when we see it on the horizon.
*******
Learning something that is both new and profound is nearly always frightening… which is why we try to avoid it.
*******
Humans do not seek to learn anything new so much as they seek to verify that they already know everything.
*******
Existence is not optional.
*******
Some religious leaders do not wish to learn about God so much as they wish to BE God... or at least what they imagine God to be... which is usually pretty perverse.
*******
A man cannot conceive of a god any greater than himself.
I stole this one.... someone else said it first… but it goes a long way towards explaining why those who describe an egotistical deity who grants special favors to a select few are merely exposing the flaws in their own character... and trying to sucker you into supporting their political agenda in the bargain.
*******
God loves you and there is nothing you can do to avoid it, even if you try.
*******
God loves everyone else just as much as you… get over it!
*******
Serious students of religious thought study all religions just as serious students of botany study plants in general, not just daffodils.
*******
Dying is a learned skill...  just one in a long line of life transitions.
*******
There are two kinds of people in the world; living people and dying people… and they view the world very differently.
*******
The way dying people view the world is far more sensible and functional than the way living people (the not-yet-dying) view the world.
*******
Among the not-yet-dying, what often passes for intimacy is boundary-less-ness... what often passes for depth is busy-ness... and what often passes for integrity is people-pleasing.
*******
Human beings are inclined to view their finite needs (food, clothing, shelter) as infinite,... no amount of food, clothing or shelter ever seems to be enough.
On the other hand, infinite needs (expanding one's consciousness) is generally viewed as a finite task... attend church, memorize a few biblical quotes and call it good.
*******
We are all connected in a way that makes us more than merely equal, rather, it makes us one.  I am the one and only me, and at the same time, I am you. That is the great paradox... the great spiritual truth.
*******
Feeling our emotions is essential for our personal growth... to expanding our awareness.
*******
Reducing the capacity to feel one emotion reduces the capacity to feel all emotions in like measure.  In other words, if you ever get to the point where you can no longer feel fear, congratulations... neither will you be able to feel joy.
*******
We sometimes think so as to avoid having to feel. Fortunately, most of us aren’t all that good at thinking.
*******
We humans brag that we invented language so we can communicate better.  Actually, we invented language so we can lie.
*******
It is best to do things when you think of them… because it is so very difficult to do things when you are not thinking of them.
*******
The ultimate goal of both living and dying are the same... to do it consciously.
*******
Concrete thinkers do not do well with dying, whether they be of the scientific or religious variety.
*******
Dying is an accelerated learning process.  Keep in mind however that it is difficult to learn anything new while pretending you already know everything.
*******
Earth was not set aside specially for the perfect people... obviously.
*******
You are the only gift you have to give.
*******
Reality is just the most believable illusion at the moment.
